1. Make sure your original is safe! Save a copy (file > save as) and work on the copy. Check it is an RGB file (image>mode>RGB color).

2. Check contrast is OK (image > adjust > levels or - if you're feeling lazy - auto contrast)

3. reduce image size to 800 pixels wide to give the big version (image > image size > pixel dimensions width: 800)

4. Sharpen the image if you wish - see note below

5. Save this (file > save as > mypicture_800.jpg > jpeg options: 8 high)
Please note, you can't use spaces in file names on the internet

6. once again, reduce the image size, this time to 300 pixels wide to give the small version ((image > image size > pixel dimensions width: 300)

7. Again, sharpen the image if you wish

8. and save it (file > save as > mypicture_300.jpg > jpeg options: 8 high)

Then send them to ian@t16.org.uk, with a caption if you wish.

To use Unsharp Masking:

All digital images benefit from sharpening, because they are deliberately softened to reduce jagged sloping lines. The Unsharp Masking filter is the best to use for this, because you have complete control over the process.

Firstly, make sure you're viewing your image at 'Actual Pixels' or 100%. This is important, because only then will you be able to see the effects of the sharpening.

Now open the filter (filter > sharpen > unsharp mask)

Set radius to 1.0 pixel, and threshold to 0 levels - you won't need to use any other settings. Make sure the 'Preview' box is checked.

Now fiddle with the 'Amount' slider and watch your main image. You'll see as you increase the amount the image appears to become 'sharper'. Use your judgement, somewhere between 100% and 200% would be a good starting point, but it varies and only you can decide.
